Before many Indian weddings, relatives apply turmeric paste to the bride and groom. Depending on the community it is called haldi, manjal neerattu or nalangu.

Turmeric's golden yellow has long meant auspiciousness, purity and protection. The ceremony also lets close family touch, bless and tease the couple, preparing them emotionally before the formal rites.
Modern Science
Curcumin in turmeric is studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects — but swallowing research doses is not the same as smearing homemade paste on skin. Haldi is not a sterilising treatment or a guaranteed facial, and turmeric, lemon and scented oils can irritate sensitive skin. Its greatest power is social, not medical.
