The Kodava Kitchen

In old Kodava weddings, the cooking ladle was handed to the whole village. It belongs to the Regional Tables tradition of Coorg (Kodagu).

In older Kodava (Coorg) wedding traditions a marriage was never one family's private event. Neighbours donated vegetables and bananas; women helped prepare rice flour for dishes like taliya puttu, kadumbuttu and nooputtu.

During the pre-wedding pandapani, the head of the household offered the cooking ladle and spatula to the community and declared, in effect, that the house now belonged to everyone. Skilled village cooks then prepared the pork, chicken and feast dishes.

Before banquet halls and professional caterers, weddings ran on shared labour. Preparing the feast was not merely providing food — it was how the community proved the family was not alone.
